Getting Started with Algorithmic Trading

8677 Learners
8 hours
A beginner course in algorithmic trading. See how automated trading works and the main strategy families, then follow six steps on one real strategy: a 50/200 moving average crossover on QQQ. Write Python in your browser, backtest with costs, check for overfitting and look-ahead, and use Claude as a research assistant. Finish with a capstone on SPY and XLP, and paper trade on Blueshift if you choose. No coding experience needed and nothing to install. Trading carries a risk of loss.

Prerequisites

You can start this course with no trading experience and no coding experience. Everything is built up from the beginning.

One thing to know before you begin. From the middle of the course onward you will write short pieces of Python. Usually one line at a time, with the syntax shown, hints if you get stuck, and the solution a click away. A line looks like this:

signal = np.where(data['window_ST'] > data['window_LT'], 1, 0)

That probably looks like nothing much right now. By the time you reach it you will have worked up to it in small steps, and the two optional Python bridge sections are there for exactly this reason. Take it slowly if you need to.

Nothing to install. The code runs in your browser.

For the Claude parts you need a Claude account. A free account is enough to try the prompts; paid plans allow more messages a day.

    Awesome, robust knowledge about Quant Trading.

    Great foundational course to get a background on algo trading. Good to start here before deciding if it is possible to dive into programming techniques.
  • Paul Norg USUnited States
    This was eye opening to say the least. To even see the vast amount of esoteric information that was available was daunting.

    Although I have a rich background in programming, I still went ahead and pursued this course and I have to say, I wasn't disappointed. The concepts in this course were explained so well that my basics are now more clear than ever. This course will give you a perfect heads up on the application of software for trading in the Financial markets.

    The difference I observed is that the course has interactive worksheets (Jupyter notebooks) on platform, and localised content.
